General Anesthesia and Sedation

With this form of anesthesia you will be given an IV and other medications in order to place all your fears to rest. We use state-of-the-art medical monitors during the anesthesia process and you will also receive local anesthesia (numbing shots) during this procedure after you have fallen asleep.

Following is the protocol for coming prepared to go to sleep:
1. Arrange for an adult licensed driver to stay at the office during the operation and drive you home.
2. Wear short sleeves.
3. Do not wear nail polish.
4. Avoid smoking for 6 hours prior to surgery.
5. Do not drink alcoholic beverages the night before surgery.
6. Eat a normal supper meal no later than 7:00 PM the night before the surgery.
7. From 7:00 PM to 5:30 AM, you may drink water, pop, apple juice, Gatorade, clear tea, and black coffee.
8. Do not drink anything, including water, after 5:30 AM; do not have ice, gum, candy, mints, etc. – nothing after 5:30 AM.

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide or "laughing gas" is an option for the patient that would like to drive to and from their appointment, but who is still anxious and would like to be relaxed. Fasting is not required with nitrous oxide.
Sedation dentistry is an excellent option if you have a low pain threshold or a fear of dental treatments that cannot be adequately addressed with relaxation techniques.
