Teeth may need to be extracted for a number of reasons: infection, bone loss, trauma, cavities, needing a root canal but choosing to do an extraction.
If you are choosing to have an extraction, this will be completed with local anesthesia with or without other forms of anesthesia.
Impacted Teeth
Wisdom Teeth
The wisdom tooth is the most common unerupted or impacted tooth in the mouth. When a tooth does not erupt, it may need to be removed.
They are called "wisdom teeth" because they normally try to erupt between the ages of 17-24, which is known as "The Age of Wisdom". Wisdom teeth may be present as early as approximately age 12, or as late as approximately age 27.
If ignored, the wisdom tooth may cause bone loss, cavities, cysts, or tumors. Waiting on the removal of wisdom teeth may increase the risk of complications. However, if the wisdom teeth do erupt and are cared for, they may never cause problems and be kept for a lifetime.
Exposure of an Impacted Tooth
When a tooth does not come through completely and is impacted, it may cause problems to adjacent teeth. Occasionally, teeth other than wisdom teeth need to have the tissue and bone removed around them, and a bracket and chain attached, to allow movement for braces. We will work closely with your orthodontist to ensure your case goes smoothly.
